SERIOUS-ILLNESS SUPPORT
Palliative care can address more than pain alone.
Serious illness can affect comfort, energy, sleep, appetite, mood, mobility, family roles, and the ability to keep track of a complicated care plan. Palliative care adds a team focused on how the illness and its treatment affect everyday life. It can be considered while a patient continues treatment with oncology, cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, nephrology, primary care, or other specialists.
The conversation may include pain, nausea, shortness of breath, fatigue, anxiety, depression, medication burden, caregiver stress, and uncertainty about future decisions. The appropriate plan depends on the diagnosis, symptoms, goals, existing clinicians, and what support is already in place.
